American Museum of Natural History

If there was ever a place that I couldn't not snap a milli pictures at, it would be a natural history museum. Here are a few shots I took last fall at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC.

Studio Tour: Anna Asilo-Pamasa

I first met Anna through Lilian (BFGF) back in 2011. She comes off as friendly, super chill, and kind of quiet. This is why its really surprising to see her highly visual  paintings. Sometimes cacophonous, sometimes peaceful but often a nice mixture of both,  she strings together various subjects, creating striking forms and strange narratives. Cultural references, pop cultural references and things like, "clouds, bathrooms, [her dog] lupe, gravity, hands, fast food motifs, memories, body dialect, foil, fabric that hangs just right, strangers, the texture of water, wishful thinking, hillsides" all come together in this beautiful, subconscious landscape. Pieces that you can get lost in.

Last fall, I was able to pay Anna a visit at her and her girlfriend Jocelyne's home and studio before they moved abroad. Their space is like a physical manifestation of her paintings. Not only because the walls are filled with her paintings but also decorated with pictures of family, friends, each other, books, toys, trinkets, and lots of plants. Everything arranged awkwardly and perfectly.

Portrait Slam

Last week I wrote about the talented artists over at Project Onward. Well, on Saturday, DH & I paid them a visit and got our portraits done by Andrew Hall!

I wanted Bun and Mei to be in the portraits with us and it ended up taking a lot longer than our allotted time. Many thanks to Andrew and Project Onward for being so accomodating! WE LOVE THEM

Project Onward

John Behnke

Project Onward is an arts program providing workspace and materials to artists with mental and developmental disabilities. Located downtown in Chicago's Cultural Center, you can just walk in and be in the midst of their operation which is what happened when DH & I were walking around Chicago last weekend.

I've known about the program and have been there before but for some reason, this was the first time I really stopped and took a good look around. Maybe thats what happens when you move away from a place and come back a tourist. We noticed that you could commission a portrait by one of their artists. Sittings are available throughout the week but they are holding a special Valentine's day portrait slam at discounted prices for couples! Sweet deals! I'm going to try to get Bun and Mei in our portrait too but we'll see.

Some favorites by the artists at Project Onward:

George Zuniga

Adam Hines

Michael Bryant

Lucy Woodhouse

Michael Hopkins

Blake LeNoir
