A few weeks ago, I opened a Big Cartel shop with a few items just to test it out. I have been thinking of switching my shop from Etsy to Big Cartel for a little while now. Etsy has been really good to me but when I have a big month like I did in September, the Etsy bill is not so nice. At the same time, I feel like Etsy has helped drive a lot of traffic to my shop where I don't think Big Cartel would. I love the great sense of community that exists on Etsy but if I can save $100+ on bills a month, a paid subscription service sounds a lot better to me. I just don't know how to make that transition exactly and keep people coming since everywhere I have been written up and linked from is to my current shop. Have you had any experience with this? Words of advice? Other sites I should maybe consider?
Amusingly this is exactly something I have mused over lately so I'm keen to know how this pans out for you. Etsy fees are a bitch. I think as you have become quite well established and got your name out there, and are doing amazingly, people know where to find you OFF of Etsy now, I think a move to Big Cartel will work well for you. My main fear of switching is that people just won't know where to find me, most of my orders on Etsy I think come from happy searching accidents.

Big Cartel has a nice, professional feel to it too. At this point Debbie-people know about you. Sometimes a leap of faith makes the whole world open wide for you :)

ReplyDeleteI just opened a shop on goodsie.com and I LOVE it. Really cool for easy customizing, the site works well, has built-in stats... I'm really stoked on it so far. And yeah, etsy fees are pretty harsh! I think they're actually more than paypal, which is crazy.
