Super Typhoon Haiyan Relief

Last Friday, super typhoon Haiyan hit the central Philippines. The effect was catastrophic, with an estimated 10,000 death toll, and so many now homeless and without food. With communication in so many areas still down, it's hard to tell what the damage really is.

This week I will donate all profits from poster and print sales toward UNICEF's Typhoon Yolanda Relief fund.

Please spread the word!

Little Paper Planes Presents: "Material Material" by Doug Johnston & Debbie Carlos

Opening tonight!

Come to the LPP shop to meet Michigan based Debbie Carlos and NYC based Doug Johnston. The artists have been working on a collaborative project since June where they will bring the objects to LPP and talk about this process along with their own practices. We will also be releasing a small publication documenting this project that night!

This will be a fun Monday night to meet this extremely talented artists, see the objects they made and have a drink!

"Given the fact that we work in quite different mediums and live in different states, the process of developing a collaboration was an interesting challenge. Eventually the idea of a game arose, where we would email each other assignments with some basic rules as a way to deal with the distance and to keep the tone playful and open. Based on something Doug had said in an interview, Debbie thought that the work could arise based on raw materials we would send each other. By utilizing digitally based collaborative features such as email, texts and Google, we were able to work together over great distances while also mailing each other physical materials.

Sending one material per month for 3 months over the summer, we set out to make anything we wanted, applying the one rule that we should try to avoid combining the materials with more than two other materials.

Debbie sent Doug: metal tubes and bits; a packet of mixed seeds; pure beeswax.
Doug sent Debbie: a sheet of rubber; concrete mix; a bundle of wood dowels."

November Travels

San Francisco, 2009

Taiwan, 2008

Philippines, 2006

Tomorrow we fly out bright and early and will be traveling for the entire month of November! It will be scary and exciting to be away from home for a month!

First we'll stop in San Francisco where Doug Johnston and I will be presenting our collaborative project, "Material Material",  and giving a little talk over at Little Paper Planes on Monday night (Nov 4). If you're in the bay area, we hope to see you there!

A few days later, Devin and I will be flying to Taiwan, Thailand, and finally, to the Philippines. I can't wait to see my family, whom I have not seen for 5 long years. We've never been to Thailand at all, so that will be a completely new experience for us.

We will be armed with our trusty lonely planets but, of course, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Will be posting tons of pictures on instagram, so be sure to follow me there!

#FOUNDDHC

A few months ago, I made a bunch of 4x6 prints to help me choose what images to put in my show, Quality Time.  Now that the show is about to be installed and opening this Friday, I no longer need them. Instead of shoving them in the trash, I thought I could do a little fun project with them.

I'll be leaving prints in random places in Lansing, Chicago, San Francisco, Taipei, Manila and other places for as long as they last.

If you find one, be sure to tweet or instagram it and tag it #FOUNDDHC so I can see it too!

New Guest Artist Poster: "AFTER LIFE/AFTER PARTY" by OLA ~ ONDA

I am so excited to announce DHC Shop's newest guest artists and DHC Person's good friends: OLA ~ ONDA.

Lilian Martinez of BFGF and Daniel McKee is one of the world’s cutest and smartest creative teams. Currently based out of Cincinnati,  their photography work is a culmination of their skills in other areas of artmaking and their fascination with the great mysteries of the world such as death, outerspace, and relationships. Also --------- snacks!

"AFTER LIFE/AFTER PARTY" turns a macabre subject on its head, making it fun and positive. By giving it silky duds with lovely little bursts of light pastel colors, this ghost is ready to get down.

This is DHC Shop's first poster printed in COLOR !!

Take a closer look and purchase here

HOME • VISIT : Doug Johnston + Tomoe Matsuoka

photo courtesy of Doug Johnston & Tomoe Matsuoka

Having written about Doug Johnston and Tomoe Matsuoka's work, and shot their studio in this early Studio Visit, as well as waxing poetic about what they do just in everyday life, I won't say too much about it again in this post. But as sort of magical and interesting as their studio is, their home is a lovely, quieter, airier extension of that.

I had the pleasure of house sitting for them last October while DH & I were in Brooklyn and they were traveling in Asia. Without any sort of plans on doing this little tour, I woke up in the morning to find nice little shafts of light everywhere in the apartment. What was I to do but start taking pictures? In the end, I had this nice little collection of pictures documenting their home, and tidbits of their life together.

I love how this visit came out. Its a bit more intimate than the others. Just a quiet morning at Doug & Tomoe's house.

New Moss Poster

During an early spring evening hike up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, I happened upon blankets of reindeer moss. My only other experience with this moss was at an exhibition by Icelandic artist, Olafur Eliasson at the MCA, where he had installed live reindeer moss on an entire wall of the gallery and the viewer can watch (or not watch) as the moss naturally & slowly changed color, feel it warm the air of the gallery and smell its earthy fragrance.

And for some reason, I thought this beautiful plant only existed in the magical land of Iceland, so you can imagine my surprise when I came upon so much of it during my nature walk. As striking as it was to see a whole wall blanketed with nothing but reindeer moss, I also loved how, in nature, its cloud-like forms burst through old forest debris. Now you too can have your own reindeer moss wall. On white paper and blue paper to accentuate the low, glowing evening light in the forest.

Available only in 36x48". Click here to view listing and order.

NY ART BOOK FAIR

Going to the NY Art Book Fair this week / end? Don't forget to stop by Stall Q27, in the large room (Gallery Q) on the second floor! The Manila Review and The Office of Culture and Design's table, set up like the ubiquitous Filipino Sari Sari store, will be showcasing the new issue of The Manila Review, a cultural and literary journal from the Philippines. They will also be featuring various wares by the artists and designers featured in the magazine.

I'm so excited to be part of the magazine (front and back covers as well as a little photo essay inside) and will have prints, postcards and photo_books at their booth. I'm just sad I couldn't be there myself. Send me pictures na lang!

LA

It is all of a sudden very very cold here in Michigan so I thought I'd revisit some pictures I took during the deep summer times. I want to share with you some highlights from my LA trip from July. It was some of the best times. Lots of food, getting to hang out with one of my oldest friends, Barsh whom I've known since 8th grade home room back in Manila, and her new wife Charlotte, getting to hang out with friends from Chicago, getting to hang out with new friends, getting to hang out with family, enjoying the sceneries, gawking at the natures and more food.

Loved going through these pictures and dreaming about the next time I can go back.
